Torah Meditation by Jeanette Gross

Sit comfortably... with your feet flat on the floor and your hands relaxed… gently closing your eyes.

Take a moment to feel your body.... Notice where the floor touches the soles of your feet.... how your toes feel... your ankles. Continuing up your body, if you come to any places of tightness...discomfort...pain... stop and take a moment to gently breathe into them.  Imagine a stream of light flowing through you, softening the tightness.

Inhale all the way into your belly... and exhale with a sound … letting any tension drain out. Inhale... really deeply….and exhale with a noise. Feel the tension melting away. Inhale…exhale... inhale…exhale…good.  Just let your breath come naturally now, relax, letting yourself be guided, trusting that you will be given exactly what you need.  One step after another.  Imagine that everyone in this circle, everyone you know, everyone in the world is in this same state of amazing trust and readiness to receive Divine Wisdom.

See yourself standing shoulder to shoulder with the mothers and fathers of our people.... all the way back to Sinai..... feel the sense of awe as the torah is passed through the generations and placed lovingly in your arms.... cradle it, rock it, feel the strength of the stories it holds...feel the weight of its words, the power of its history... sense the continual flow from the divine....the richness you can almost taste...

Cradle it to your heart, noticing the soft smoothness of the torah mantle....

Lay it lovingly on the altar...feel the solid coolness of the yad, gently lift it off and set it to one side...

Again, sense that velvety softness of the cover....

Take hold of its edges and slowly lift it to reveal the scroll itself... set the cover aside as well...

Grasping the handles... the eitz chayyim, tree of life... notice the smooth curves in the wood...
hold onto its branches...

Slowly unroll the scroll, just a bit, to reveal the lettering, noticing the shape and the feel of the letters... the crisp edges of the black symbols on the white parchment... let your gaze soften, allowing the white fire to blend with the black...

As you take the slender arm of the yad into your own hand, feel the power of its lineage... the guiding hand that has led our ancestors through our holy scrolls for generations and generations...See it pointing the way for our grandmothers and grandfathers, our fathers and our mothers, our children and our children's children...

Touch the outstretched finger of the yad to the letters, take some moments to just be with this physical manifestation of the oral history of our people Israel..........

Staring at the text, let your gaze soften even more, let the words slowly melt into the flowing living waters, the mayim chayyim of our stories...gently pouring forth the wisdom of our elders, all the way from the very source of life.... see these sweet waters filling your heart of hearts.... let the fullness embrace you.... your soul drenched with the richness of a mother's song....let the song surround you, draping over you... let this familiar melody envelop you as a tallit... rest gently in that divine embrace....

As you lean back into this gentle strength, knowing with certainty that you will be held... drink in the words, let yourself be nourished....let every cell know the stories of our people....

Long before our written Torah, the stories were passed lovingly from the lips of one generation to the next.... the oral torah.... fluid... strong yet gentle...ever changing, ever the same...

Sit comfortably in the knowing.... the stories are all there within you....we have only to find the keys that open those gates....

As you gaze at the stream of our ancestors.... turn and look ahead to see the future generations stretching out even beyond the far horizon....

In these last moments, taste the sweet nectar of our stories... rolling it around in your mouth... it is all right there... drink it in....

Before opening your eyes, take whatever kind of stretch you need, Let your heart open to reveal the Torah that you need most as we rejoin the circle, and when you are ready, open your eyes... feeling the divine embrace we create for each other as we journey through our evening of Torah....
